What makes Cowork different from chatting

Most people use AI like a vending machine: ask a question, grab an answer, walk away. Cowork is a teammate that works on your actual files and actually does the job.

The difference is not a button. It is what you ask for. Chat answers questions. Cowork makes a plan, carries it out step by step, and shows you what it did.

Chat
  • "What should go in a listing description?"
Cowork
  • "Read these three listing sheets and write a description for each one, in my voice."

Ask for the second kind and you are using Cowork, whatever your screen happens to call it.

What you need, and where it runs

This is the part most write-ups get wrong, because it changed recently.

You need a paid Claude plan. Pro is $20 a month and it is what unlocks Cowork. Max, Team and Enterprise work too. There is no free tier for this.

Cowork runs on the web at claude.ai, on your phone, and in the desktop app. Start wherever you already are. You do not need to download anything to begin.

You need the desktop app for exactly four things

Reading and writing files on your computer, local connectors, browsing, and letting Claude drive your screen. Everything else runs fine in a browser. Which means the download is not a hurdle on the way in, it is the upgrade you reach for when you want it touching your real work.

The six steps

About fifteen minutes, and the fourth one is the one that matters.

  1. Get a paid plan

Pro at $20 a month is the one that unlocks it. No plan yet? Start free at claude.ai and upgrade when you are ready.

  2. Open Claude and ask for work

If you see Chat and Cowork options, pick Cowork. If you do not see them, you are on the newer version where every conversation does both. Nothing to switch.

  3. Give it something real

Not a question. A job. "Organize this folder." "Read this contract and tell me what matters."

  4. Connect a folder

This is the magic step, and the reason to install the desktop app. A folder turns Claude from a chatbot into a teammate that can open, read, organize and create your real files.

  5. Watch the plan

Claude tells you what it intends to do before it does it. Read that part. It is where you catch a misunderstanding for free.

  6. Approve, then let it run

You say yes or change this. Keep the app open while it works on local files.

The one rule

You're the boss. Claude's the assistant. Review the plan and approve before it changes or sends anything.

A folder is what turns a chatbot into a teammate.

The guide walks through connecting one, plus how Cowork's memory works and the prompt that moves everything it knows about you over from ChatGPT or Gemini.
